What is digital signage?

Digital signage is something that many of us see in our day to day lives, as an increasing number of businesses and organisations are using it to promote their products and services, support and communicate with their visitors and engage with their customers.

It is now a very important tool as it can be used in a wide range of ways, so here, we look at what digital signage is, and why it looks to be a big part of the future for so many businesses.

In the past, businesses relied on printed posters or hand designed boards to promote their wares. Whilst these could be effective, they also had their limitations, as a lot of time, effort and money was required every time that they needed to be changed. These days, digital screens are now a far more popular option, thanks to their versatility and adaptability.

Digital screens can appear anywhere, as a statement in a window, an A-Board outside a shop, a menu above a counter or an information board at the entrance to a business. They can be incredibly eye-catching and can incorporate videos and animations as well as static images, to make them much more appealing than traditional posters.

In addition to providing information and advertising, digital signage can also be interactive, thanks to touchscreen technology. This means that customers can scan QR codes, search for information or even place orders using your screens, meaning that it can have a direct impact on the sales that you can make.

Where is digital signage used?

One of the fantastic things about digital signage is that there is no limit to the number of places that it can be used. Many retail stores choose to use it to promote what they sell, by showing video adverts on digital signage in windows or as entire video walls.

Many restaurants and cafes use digital menu boards to show everything that they have on offer, whilst estate agents can provide up to the minute information on their property portfolios.

Digital signage is not just used for selling, and so it can appear in other organisations, such as schools and healthcare settings to help improve communication. It can be used as a wayfinding tool, to outline policies or to provide important information.

Why is digital signage popular?

Digital signage is popular because of the visual appeal that it has. Clear LCD displays pick out artwork perfectly, and with the right content creation tools, it is possible to display slick and professional images and videos that are difficult for customers to resist. Digital signage can also be updated any time, with immediate effect, so you can be confident that the information you are showing is correct and up to date.
